"Sunflowers continue to be a special image for me.  I thoroughly enjoy painting them. They speak to us as a cheerful art image, synonymous with happy art that has a common touch. Everyone smiles at sunflowers!  My fascination with design and imagery as visual words attracted me to the sunflower image." 

The sunflower painting above, "Sunflower Series #5'", a 28" x 20" watercolor, art critic Alan R. Hayakawa  featured in an article about Joann's bright flower paintings in the Portland, OR "Oregonian" newspaper in 1983.

"I liked your opening statement about 'touching hearts'. Sunflowers touch my heart in several ways. They follow the sun and grow. It reminds me of my relationship with God. They are flexible which reminds me of how I must be when the storms of life come. They need propping up when they grow old. This reminds me of the importance of friends. I like their fragrance when in bloom. The air is permeated with sweetness which reminds me of all the simple things in life which are such a blessing. I like how the bees and birds draw nourishment from them. They give so freely of themselves and ask only a little sun and rain in return. When their time has passed they continue on by providing nourishment to the birds and squirrels in the dead of winter when there is little to eat.
